It is powered by small watch-type duracell batteries, and yes you can do it without even wearing a shirt or any jewelry. The shock itself on the high setting isn't that powerful, but to the unsuspecting person mixed into a routine is VERY powerful; it's just another tool to be used in creating mind-numbing performances. But this is of great quality and im really pleased with this item.
And yes you do feel some of the shock but you kinda get used to it after a while, those that have the mindfreak tv series on dvd know where Angel is at Jonathan's house and they're playing the shock game; you just have to add I guess it would be Banachek's witchdoctor technique and make it convincing. I also got free loops with mine but im not too familiar with them, some very cool stuff on the dvd though; just takes a little practice.
You can manipulate water which can go into some unique storylines, im not too fond of using it to move shredded pieces of paper but I guess that depends on the performer.
The coolest part I think is being able to see the spark at night, I worked out a routine by applying this along with luke jermay's bubble burst suggestion and the result was really amazing. I had this girl think of a two digit number between 50-100 (with some other suggestion built in) then I told her she was going to feel her thought leave her head and enter my mind. I waited for a little bit and just before I touched her finger she said she FELT it and right about the middle of her saying that I touched her finger and the people around could SEE the electic thought travel to me and I revealed the number; this one effect by itself should make me a billionaire.
I would just say buy it if you have the money, and keep in mind that it is device like the M5, ultrasmoke, the scorpion...etc that should be used with other matieral or I would say it at least requires a strong performance, and shouldn't be used alone just to shock people.

I have not been this excited about a Magic product since the night I built the first Thread Reel, and I have not said this about many Magic Products, this will be the biggest hit in Magic perhaps of all time, since when can you do a stage effect close-up? The performer is seen to rise three to four inches- and hover- momentarily.
